Fife High School is in the midst of a strong winter postseason with the boys and girls basketball teams fighting two very strong fields at the WCD III tournament. Despite fielding just their second-team ever, the Fife boys swim team will be sending a slew of swimmers and a diver to the state meet starting on Friday, Feb. 17. The Trojans will also be sending two wrestlers to compete at the state Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
The boys’ basketball team (14-11) knocked off Clover Park in the district opener in a 63-60 barnburner. Up next was a shot at second-seed North Kitsap. Despite having two chances to tie the game in the final minute, Fife fell 46-41. The boys bounced back in the consolation round with a 67-62 win over Port Angeles. The Trojans will face Olympic on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Curtis at 7:45 p.m. Winner goes to regionals, while the loser is out. The Fife girls (15-9) defeated River Ridge in their opener, only to fall to second-seed North Kitsap 49-36 in the second round. The Trojans face Sequim on Wednesday, Feb. 15 a few hours after this issue goes to press.
The boys swim team will be sending Chris Kim, Lewis Wentler, Nate Hudson, Charlie Wentler, Axel Mejjia, and Gavin Georgitsis to the state swim meet. Khalil Johnson qualified in the diving competition.
Fife senior David Knight will wrestle Colton Severson of Tumwater at 145-pounds on Friday at 11:44 at the Mat Classic. Trojan sophomore Gavin Knapp will face Riley Swartz from Sedro Woolley at 182-pounds at 12:48.
