Continuing a solid season that has promising hopes, the Fife boys and girls wrestling teams both captured the titles at the SPSL 2A tournament on Feb. 4.

Glenn Robertson, Rhyse Zenkner, Maverick Reddaway and Monike Failauga all won individual championships for the boys, and Danielle Volk, Lateah Holmes, Madison Thackara and Kimiko Misioka all won their individual brackets for the girls to claim the team titles.

"Overall I think we did better than I was expecting," said head coach Brandon Howard of the boys' results. "Those four champs, it wasn't a surprise they were champs."

Robertson pinned Sumner's Travis Filleau late in the second round to claim the 106-pound title, while Failauga pinned White River's Justin Nale with just under 30 seconds left in the second round for the 285-pound title.

"(Robertson's) got a really good shot to be in the state finals this year," said Howard, adding that Failauga, who like Robertson is just a sophomore, "is really physical on his feet."

Reddaway won 14-4 in the 138-pound final over Sumner's Jed Schliesman, while Zenkner took the 132-pound title with a 12-3 win over Sumner's Jeremy Jackson after pinning his previous three opponents. Howard pointed to both wrestlers having tough potential matchups at the upcoming district tournament, but said the team seems more prepared than before. "I think over the last couple of months our kids have really started to bring things together, and I think they're prepared for these kids."

Volk pinned Vashon's Julie Wilson to take the 130-pound final for the girls, and Holmes followed later with a pin of Franklin Pierce's Angelica Vashchenko midway through the first round of the 145-pound final. Thackara pinned White River's Dylan Fagan early in the 155-pound title bout, and Misioka pinned White River's Kamy Padgett to claim the 265-pound title.

The regional tournament for the boys takes place at Olympic High School on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m., while the girls travel to Emerald Ridge on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m.

TROJAN GIRLS FALL TWICE

The Fife girls basketball team fell 66-41 to Washington on Feb. 7 in an SPSL 2A tiebreaker that set them up for a sub-district matchup at Foster High School on Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Ciara Pedroni led all scorers with 20 points and Claire Smith had eight points for the Trojans, who struggled in the second quarter and fell behind 37-20 at the half.

Pedroni scored 24 points and led the Trojans to an 18-16 lead over first-place Eatonville on Feb. 3, but the Cruisers came back with a strong second half to beat Fife 47-37.

The Lady Trojans finished with the regular season with a 10-11 overall record and a 7-8 record in league play, good for fifth place.

FIFE BOYS SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT

Two wins last week vaulted the Trojan boys into the postseason picture, as they ready for a sub-district matchup on Feb. 10 at Sumner High School at 6 p.m.

Fife jumped out to a 43-20 first-half lead and cruised to a 60-39 win over Washington on Feb. 1 behind Brock Carpenter's 19 points, while Bryce Miller added 13 points.

The Trojans then beat Eatonville 50-38 on Feb. 3, as they clung to a 25-20 lead after three quarters, but scored 25 points in the fourth to pull away. Miller led Fife with 11 points while Chris Glahn added 10 points.

The Trojans finished the regular season at 7-13 overall and 5-9 in league play.
