The warmth of summer means many different things to many different people – a break from school, a trip to the beach – but for the citizens of Milton it’s impossible to feel the heat and not think of Milton Days, the classic community celebration this year taking place Aug. 15-16 at Milton Community Park.

“We really want to get back to that community picnic feel,” Milton Events Committee Chair April Balsley said.

Fans of the community event can expect the return of many old favorites, like live music on the main stage and plenty of local vendors, as Milton Days that continues to grow and expand with the city while retaining its traditional roots.

However, this year as you pull up to Milton Community Park, you may see some new sites, particularly in the form of a cavalcade of entertainment for children. Everything from carnival rides and mini-golf to more unique attractions like giant, extreme games of Jenga and Connect Four will be present at the park.

“We are really trying to center it around kids,” Balsley said. “What kid doesn’t want to see the cars and fire trucks?”

For citizens looking for more classic carnival activities, new Milton arrival Haggen’s is donating materials for several contests, including pie eating and a sack race.

“A lot of getting back to that community picnic feel,” as Balsley described it. “Milton Days has gone on for decades, but it started as a community picnic.”

The celebration is a great place to get involved with the Milton community, specifically local businesses around the area.

“It’s a community event and we can put a little more eyes on [local businesses] as well. It’s really a win-win situation,” Balsley said.

To keep up with Milton Days and to find out about the latest updates in the lead up to the event, follow the Milton Events Committee on Facebook. Recognition for community partners, as well as the process of putting the event together, will be shared.

“We want to bring more social interaction to the community, to really bring them in,” Balsley said. “We want to make sure we have a strong community. It’s great to have them give back and in return show them as much recognition as we can.”

If you have never been to Milton Days it’s a unique way to spend a weekend mixing with not only local businesses and community members, but also city council representation.

“Why not spend their weekend here? Local people, a community, plenty of stuff for kids, free live music as well as a meet and greet for the mayor and council members,” Balsley said. “Mayor Perry, this has been her baby since she took office. She is an amazing woman,”

Milton Days has continued to build and build thanks to a dedicated events committee that wants to continue to make Milton Days something to look forward to every year.

‘’[The Milton Events Committee] is the driving force of Milton Days,” Balsly said.

Milton Days will be kicked off by the annual parade on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m., with opening ceremonies taking place at 11:30, and citizens are free to enjoy the celebration until 10 p.m. that night. Sunday will see a day of fun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
