Children around Fife better brush up on their skills at playing checkers. There will be a float of the classic board game under a lot of Christmas trees this year.

The Fife Police Department and Tacoma Fire Department, which provides fire service to the city, are set to again hand out holiday cheer at three Santa runs at different locations this year. Gift giving will be held at 10 a.m. on the south side of the city on Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. around areas of the city between the railroad tracks and Interstate 5 on Dec. 14, and at 10 a.m. on the north side areas of Fife and Fife Heights on Dec. 20.

The events will include visits with Santa and holiday cheer, including the delivery of gifts for every child thanks to donations from the community and a whopping 30 pallets of toys and clothes from Regal Distribution. That donation includes more than 1,000 checkerboards and hundreds of pairs of pajamas. The effort has gathered far too many toys to just provide gifts to Fife children, so some of the items will go to children in need as far away as DuPont, Steilacoom, Tacoma and Fircrest.

“We are just sort of making it a regional thing and sharing what we have,” said Assistant Police Chief David Woods.

Santa Claus will also be stopping by each of the East Pierce Fire and Rescue fire stations this weekend to join the firefighters in wishing a happy holiday for communities they serve. Visitors will be able to tour the stations as well as have their photo taken with the grand bellied wonder.

“We will have hot cocoa, apple cider and coffee, plus candy canes of course,” East Pierce Firefighter James Parke said, noting that the firefighters will be accepting donations of canned foods for the local food banks.

Santa, accompanied by his firefighter elves, will still be participating in area parades and making his annual rounds to area assisted living centers in December.

Santa Run

The Fife Police Department and Fire Department, along with Santa Clause, will be running through Fife handing out holiday cheer in December. There will be three Santa Runs at three different locations, although all start at 10 a.m. Dec. 13 from the railroad tracks South, Dec. 14 from the railroad tracks to I5 and on Dec. 20 everything North of I5 including Fife Heights.
