Assistant principals from four Fife Schools took it to the streets on Monday, Aug. 14 for a day of “Popsicles with Your Administrators,” a chance for area parents/guardians to get answers to any questions about back-to-school for Fife students before the big first day back on Sept. 6.
There to help out were Mark Beddes, Columbia Junior High School assistant principal; Amy Mittelstaedt, Hedden Elementary assistant principal; Megan Gallwas, Surprise Lake Middle School assistant principal; and Brian Neufeld, Endeavour Intermediate Elementary assistant principal. Setting up informational tables in the parking lots of four Fife apartment complexes, the day started at the Astoria Apartments then moved on to The Lakes Apartments, Chateau Rainier Apartments and Bella Sonoma Apartments. It was a beautiful, sunny summer day for such an outing, and a unique opportunity for school personnel to meet their neighbors.
The outing was the brainchild of Beddes and Mittelstaedt, who both had attended a teachers’ conference and came back with ideas on how Fife Schools could reach out to students before school gets officially underway and reach out to parents/guardians who may not be able to make it to Fife Schools’ official back-to-school informational open house events. The day was especially helpful for new families who have just moved to Fife and starting their children in a new school.
“It’s a way to bring the open house to them and answer questions,” Beddes said. “One of our district strategic goals is parent, family and community engagement. We open and we invite them in but this is a way for us to go to them and have conversations with them.”
There was a wide variety of information available including bus schedules, orientation and open house dates and times, lunch and breakfast program information and ways to help children succeed in school by building the habit of good attendance.
There was also information given on Fife Forward, the program to provide every Fife Public Schools student with a digital device in keeping with the recently approved technology levy approved by voters. Students in grades 6-12 will receive a Chromebook and each classroom in grades K-5 will have a dedicated class set of devices for each student to use, providing the opportunity for technology-rich teaching and learning throughout the day.
