The East Pierce Fire and Rescue Board of Fire Commissioners
appointed local businessman Victor Proulx to fill a vacancy following the retirement of Commissioner Rick Kuss. Proulx was sworn in during the April 21 regular board of commissioners meeting. His first official meeting will be May 19. However, he will be participating in the fire chief selection process currently underway. “Since this vacancy is being filled by appointment, Commissioner Proulx will serve until the results of the November 2015 election have been certified,” says East Pierce Fire Commissioner Chair Dale Mitchell.
Three applicants were considered for the position. “All three candidates were very qualified,” says East Pierce Fire Commissioner Mike Cathey. “It wasn’t an easy decision. Each one would have brought value to the board.”
Originally from St. Maries, Idaho, Proulx grew up in the Renton area. He moved to Bonney Lake in 1984 where he lives with his partner and co-owner of 410 Rentals, Gail Bohnas. Before opening his own business, Proulx worked for more than 20 years at 40 Rentals and three years at United Rentals, in Bonney Lake. He previously served as an East Pierce fire commissioner from 2005 to 2011 and is a current board member of the East Pierce Fire and Rescue Foundation.
“I’d like to thank the board for this opportunity to fill this open position for the rest of the year,” says Proulx. “I’m hoping to bring my business and budgetary experience into the process to help make sure people’s money is being spent wisely and the firefighters are taken care of.”Proulx has announced his intention to run for re-election in November. Four other commissioners are also up for re-election, including Mitchell, Cathey, plus Karlynne McGinnis and Ron Scholz. Commissioners Ed Egan and Kevin Garling are the only board members who are not up for election this year. The deadline for filing applications for one of the five board positions is May 11-15. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and reside within the boundaries of the fire district. East Pierce provides fire, rescue and emergency medical service to Bonney Lake, Edgewood, Sumner, Milton and much of unincorporated East Pierce County. The East Pierce Fire Commissioners form a seven-member board elected by the public. The board meets monthly to determine levels of service; establish goals, type and level of funding; approve budgets; establish tax levies; approve policies and operational procedures; employ key personnel; supervise the fire chief; guide strategic planning and represent the district to the public. All regular meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month. Meetings are open to the public and offer residents an opportunity for citizen input.
