People in Northeast Tacoma, Fife and on the Tideflats might hear a boom this afternoon as Port of Tacoma contractors use light explosives on the former Kaiser Aluminum site on the east side of the Blair Waterway.
This is the first of a series of detonations—about one or two a day—planned this week and possibly into next to decommission deep wells that once provided water to the former aluminum plant.
A licensed explosives technician is scheduled mid afternoon to detonate the first charge about 500 feet below the ground. All work will be done during daylight hours.
Visitors will be kept away from the site for safety reasons. No road closures or detours are expected.
