1,250 petition utility tax in Edgewood

Following approval of a 3.5 percent utility tax by Edgewood City Council in December 2009, more than 1,200 residents signed a petition rebutting the decision. The amount of signatures required to validate the petition based on Edgewood's voting population is 950. Pierce County auditor is currently reviewing the petition, but Edgewood council members are moving ahead with discussion on what to do next.
Council may decide to place the utility tax measure on the ballot for the April 27 special election. Participating in the special election could cost the city upwards of $20,000.
Council adopted the final reading of the tax 5-2 Dec. 8 in hopes to generate enough money to fill the city's looming $450,000 budget shortfall. The tax would have expired after three years and would cost the average resident $14 per month.
Council plans to further discuss next steps for the city's financial future during scheduled special and regular council meetings Jan. 26 beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
