Maybe home cooking would be ideal, but the Fife Trojan football team is looking forward to getting back onto the field for its game this week, even if it is in Aberdeen.
“We are having a good week of practice,” said coach Kent Nevin, after having watched his team take a 46-7 pounding against Cascade Christian on Sept. 7 in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic.
“We are going back to basics,” he said.
Coaches often say they expect to see the most improvement in their teams from the first week to the second, having some real data to work with and a list of things that need improvement.
“It will tell us a lot,” Nevin said, in terms of how the team will respond to a defeat like that. He is looking forward to seeing how his team learned from the mistakes of the first game.
“It’s across the board. Holding blocks, playing better everywhere on the field.”
Cascade Christian was particularly successful on first-down plays, averaging about six or seven yards, seemingly putting the Trojans on the their heels from the beginning of the game.
Fife reached the 2A quarterfinals for the first time since 1988, but this roster might take a while to gel.
“That was not the level of football we were expecting to see,” Nevin said.
The Trojans are counting on the Josh Porter to lead a young defensive unit to a better performance. On offense, the Trojans want to get Dustin Yarrington, the senior wide receiver, much more involved than he was against Cascade Christian.
The Trojans’ first home game is Sept. 19 against Blanchet, but they are determined not to wait for that to be their first victory.
A number of the players, after practice, were in the stands to cheer on the Fife volleyball team in its game Sept. 8, when they defeated Wilson.
The consensus among them was they will be much more ready for that kind of winning performance themselves in week two than they were for week one.
