Fife to show movies in Dacca Park

This summer, visitors to Fife’s Dacca Park will have the opportunity to experience bees and Scottish brogues on a 40-foot inflatable screen.

For the second year in a row, the city is hosting summer Movie in the Park events. This year, “Bee Movie” and “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep” will be the films of choice. Apart from selecting family-friendly movies, the Fife Parks Department considered films that related to the summer season. “Bee Movie” will be shown July 19 and “The Water Horse” on Aug. 23.

“We also encourage people to bring blankets and volleyballs and basketballs and enjoy the park as well, not just watch the movie,” said Recreation Director Colin Brooks. “It’s not just for the movie, it’s kind of a family event.”

Brooks encourages families to get to the park around 6 or 7 p.m. to hang out, throw Frisbees or have a picnic. The movies will begin at dusk. The park’s concession stand will be open for the event.

Last year, the city cancelled their first movie event due to rain and rescheduled it, which negatively affected attendance. But this year, Brooks said the city has done a lot more advertising, and hopes to have 100 people or more at each event.

He also hopes the event will highlight the city’s parks system.

“I’ve been getting a lot of phone calls asking where the park is, so hopefully this will bring people to the park and showcase the park,” he said, adding that a lot of new families have moved into the area and have not yet experienced many of the city’s parks.

Dogs are allowed at the park as long as they are on leashes.

“Bee Movie” is about college graduate – and bumblebee – Barry B. Benson, who wants more in life than to follow the inevitable, traditional career path that awaits him. So Barry ventures out of the hive and meets a human florist named Vanessa and talks to her, developing a friendship. Jerry Seinfeld and Renée Zellweger give their voice talents to the film, which is rated PG for mild suggestive humor and a brief depiction of smoking.

“The Water Horse” is about a young boy named Angus, who finds a large, mysterious egg on the shores of Loch Ness in Scotland. Soon, the egg hatches and out comes one of the most famous and controversial fabled creatures in the world. But as his newfound friend grows, Angus finds it more and more difficult to keep him a secret. “The Water Horse” stars Emily Watson, Alex Etel and Brian Cox. It is rated PG for action, mild language and brief smoking.
