BIKERS AT LAST YEAR’S “LET’S RIDE” FUNDRAISER FOR THE EDGEWOOD FOOD BANK STOP AT WHISTLIN’ JACK LODGE FOR LUNCH BEFORE HEADING BACK OVER CHINOOK PASS.

Local motorcycle riders are joining forces for the third year to support families in Pierce County.

Starting at Edgewood Food Bank Aug. 7, motorcyclists will depart on a 195-mile day trip over Chinook Pass and back as a way to raise money for the Edgewood Food Bank.

The event was started by a group of chiropractors who wanted another excuse to ride their motorcycles. Edgewood’s Harmony Health Chiropractic office sponsors the event that will raise money for the food bank for the third year in a row.

Because cash donated to food banks has more buying power (every $1 donated can purchase $3 worth of food) the ride has made a big impact in the amount of hungry families the food bank can serve.

In the past, organizers have charged a registration fee for riders as a way to raise funds for the food bank. This year, the ride is free and is open to all vehicles (even four-wheeled automobiles). Cash donations will be accepted from riders, passengers and participants and passed on to the food bank.

“The first year we had 15 bikes and about 20 people involved. We raised over $500 – that’s $1,500 spending power – and had a great time,” said Dr. Ronald Acosta, owner of Harmony Health Chiropractic and Massage and organizer for this year’s event.

“Last year we had 16 bikes and raised nearly $700 (that’s $2,000 plus spending power for the food bank),” Acosta said.

“This year I hope to receive donations from local businesses and increase our ridership. If we could double our riders and double the donations to the food bank, there will be a lot of happy people out there.”

Participants will meet at Edgewood Food Bank at 8 a.m. for breakfast, snacks and coffee before departing at 8:30 a.m.

The route travels via Orting, Buckley, Enumclaw and Chinook Pass to Whistlin’ Jack Lodge for lunch, before the troop will return back to Edgewood. The trip should go until about 5 p.m.

“Every donation is well-received as people are coming together to help one another,” Acosta said.  “The energy we share with others to promote the event and plan for it, the actual day of riding and the goodwill that it produces is a very healthy experience.”

Sign up in advance by calling or e-mailing Harmony Health Chiropractic and Massage at (253) 840-1100, .

Donations made at the Harmony Health office come with a raffle ticket for a chance to win massage therapy gift certificates. Checks made out to the Edgewood Food Bank and sent to Harmony Health will be added to the grand total and forwarded to the food bank. Income tax receipts are available.

Edgewood Food Bank is located at 2505 122nd Ave. E., in Edgewood.
