On Aug. 14 Edgewood will once again host its premiere community event: the Edgewood City Picnic.
Always a summer favorite for the 500 and growing Edgewood residents who attend each year, the picnic continues to offer fun for the whole family from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Edgemont Park.
Live performers will entertain the children and adults on the main stage throughout the day, food and other vendors will be present, Edgewood’s favorite picnic games will be played, along with the third annual barbecue competition.
This year, the barbecue competition, hosted by local barbecue expert Rick Naug, will be exclusive only to local firefighters. Teams made up from fighters from across the state will compete in “Barbecue to the Rescue,” cooking pulled pork and hotdogs for the judges to choose the best flavor from the fire. All proceeds from entry fees for the teams and sales of food will benefit the Northwest Burn Center.
For the children there will be wandering characters and clowns, face painting, balloon artists and bouncy toys to play on.
Parents can peruse the various vendors and informational booths, and learn about Pierce County’s new mass emergency notification plan.
Families can try their hands at Edgewood’s classic picnic games: “Pennies in the Hay,” the water balloon toss and the “World Famous Cowchip Toss.”
All the games have prizes for the top competitors.
The day will open at 11 a.m. with opening
ceremonies from Veterans of Foreign Wars and a welcoming message from Mayor Jeff Hogan.
At 11:30 a.m., Giraffe and Staff Puppet Company will take the stage with an
exciting cast of animal puppets, headed by George, the eight-foot-tall giraffe. Following the show, audience members can partake in a finger puppet
workshop with puppeteers Sharon Allbright and Steve Sweeney.
Next up are the comedy jugglers The Entertainmen at 12:30 p.m., followed by Seattle-based acoustic singer-songwriter Daniel Kamas at 1:15 p.m.
Local pop, country rock and blues outfit Tatoosh closes the live performances for the day, taking the stage at 2:30 p.m.
Booth space is still available and picnic organizers are still seeking volunteers to help run the event. Event sponsors include Bartelson Transport, Slavic Church of Salvation, Korum Automotive Group, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Timberland Bank, Sterling Automotive Service and Gardening For Life.
