The Milton City Council approved a plan that would provide additional water to residents during times of shortages.
Council members voted in favor of a wholesale water intertie agreement with the Mt. View-Edgewood Water Company at their meeting on Jan. 19. This agreement will allow the city to access up to 500 gallons of water per minute from the company’s surplus water supply. This agreement would require the city to pay a monthly, ready-to-serve fee of $213.74, but would reserve a certain amount of water for Milton.
Public Works Director Letticia Neal said this agreement is not intended to be a long-term solution to shortages that may arise. Additionally, Neal commented that this agreement would be a supplement to the city’s current emergency intertie agreement with the Lake Haven Utility District.
“It would fill in any gray areas, where a situation might not be a full emergency,” Neal said.
Under this newly approved wholesale water agreement, the either party could terminate the contract at any time, for any reason. This raised concerns for Councilmember Debra Perry, who feared the city could be left vulnerable during a crisis, if Mt. View-Edgewood decides to terminate the contract without notice. Neal reassured council members that the company is reputable and would not likely terminate the contract unless something went seriously wrong.
“I truly believe Mt. View-Edgewood will deal fairly and honestly with the city of Milton,” Neal said.
