PUPPETS PLEASE MARIONETTES DAZZLED CHILDREN WITH SONGS AND LAUGHS AT THE MILTON LIBRARY ON JUNE 23. The show helped kick off the summer reading program.

To help kick off the Pierce County Library Summer Reading Program in Milton, Puppets Please Marionettes preformed songs with their stringed friends on June 23. The reading program is for youth birth-18 and runs through Sept. 5 in all 17 library locations and three bookmobiles.

“Summer reading is an important and special time,” said Neel Parikh, executive director of Pierce County Library. “For weeks Pierce County Library’s librarians have been visiting all public elementary schools in our service area and unveiling the theme with lots of surprises and celebration.”

This year’s theme for children aged 3-12 is “Be Creative @ Your Pierce County Library” and offers many fun, free programs including learning how to create cartoons, rocking out with musical group Recess Monkey and exploring magic and wacky inventions with Magician Jeff Evans. When kids read 20 minutes for a total of 10 hours, they earn a prize, which includes a free pass to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium or Northwest Trek.

The program’s theme for teens is “Express Yourself @ your Library.” This offers a variety of free programs including playing video and Wii games, rocking with Guitar Hero, and watching Japanese anime DVDs. For every 10 hours a teenager reads, they may enter a drawing to win a Flip Video camcorder, a gift from Pierce County Library Foundation. Teenagers may also earn programs, technology or other rewards for their library. Friends of the Library will sponsor a special project for each library based on the number of hours teens read.

Parikh explained that year-round reading, through the Library’s Summer Reading program, helps prepare children for school in the fall.

Registration may be required for some programs, so those interested should contact the their local branches for details. Rotaries of Pierce County are the primary sponsor for Pierce County Library’s Summer Reading program, along with donations to Pierce County Library Foundation and Friends of the Libraries.

More information about the program is available in the libraries and bookmobiles as well as online @ http://www.piercecountylibrary.org, search site “summer reading.”
