THIS 1984 PHOTO OF 1-YEAR-OLD MOLLY GOULDEN RECENTLY RECEIVED HONORABLE MENTION IN THE ‘HIKERS IN ACTION’ CATEGORY OF WASHINGTON TRAILS ASSOCIATION’S NORTHWEST EXPOSURE 2009 PHOTO CONTEST.
On the verge of retirement, Edgewood photographer Jeff Goulden has re-sparked an interest in one of his favorite pastimes.
By digging through old slides of his family’s outdoor escapades, converting them to photographs, and taking new digital shots, he has began to get his work back out in the published world by selling photos through an online stock photography website and submitting to various photo contests.
Goulden’s 1984 photo of his daughter at the dedication of the William O. Douglas Wilderness reserve in Snoqualmie National Forrest recently received honorable mention in the Northwest Exposure 2009 photo contest.
The snapshot featured his daughter Molly, who was 1 year old at the time, decked out in hiking gear.
As an avid outdoorsmen, Goulden has a subscription to Washington Trails Association Magazine, and read about the publication’s photo contest.
He submitted the photo of his daughter, toddling around Bumping Lake, to the “Hikers in Action” category of the Washington Trails Association contest.
About 750 entries total were submitted to the contest.
“It’s not a huge contest, but I’m happy to be recognized…it’s always a thrill to see the work published,” he said.
And while Goulden recognizes the photo is not representative of his best work – his forte is in scenic landscape as is evident on his website of stunning landscape shots – he credits the “cute factor” in his whim to submit the photo, as well as in its selection for honorable mention.
The photo is also representative of his family’s longstanding dedication to the outdoors.
“Molly was raised in a backpack,” said Margie Goulden, Jeff’s wife.
Molly’s childhood spent with her parents on outdoor expeditions and hikes has sparked an ongoing interest in her life as a 26-year old.
“We’ve always been active in the outdoors, used to do a lot of backpacking. We raised Molly to do that, now she’s into mountain climbing,” Jeff Goulden said.
