The Milton Police Department, in conjunction with the Milton Police Foundation, recently held an awards banquet for local officers and their families. About 50 police officers, family members and community officials gathered on Jan. 24 at Dave’s of Milton restaurant to help celebrate the department’s professional accomplishments.
Deborah Berglund, president of the Milton Police Foundation, said this is the department’s second year hosting the event. She became involved after seeing a need to recognize the officers within the community. Berglund said that in the weeks following the murders of several area law enforcement officers, residents have come to appreciate their local police officers more.
“The community support has been overwhelmingly incredible,” Berglund said.
Within the coming months, the Milton Police Foundation plans to host more police/community events and fundraisers. Berglund said the foundation’s main focus this year is to raise enough money to equip the Milton Police Department with a K-9 unit.
Several officers were honored with distinctions and awards at the gathering. This year, the Milton Police Department presented four awards: a Medal of Merit for a full-time and reserve officer and Officer of the Year for a full-time and reserve officer.
Winners included:
Det. Amy Camden – Medal of Merit
Sgt. Nils Luckman – Medal of Merit
Officer Kevin Peterson – Officer of the Year
Officer Shawn Huecker – Reserve Officer of the Yea
