FIFE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES DELANEY PEUGH, MEGAN HARKNESS (ABOVE) AND CAM BOOSER ENJOYED GREAT SUCCESS IN THE FALL SPORTS SEASON.

As usual, Fife High School athletes were dotting the maps of state playoff venues this fall. Outstanding performances by swimmers Megan Harkness, Delaney Peugh, volleyball player Taylor Dillard and the announcement by Cam Booser that he would be attending Oregon State University on a baseball scholarship are the top stories. But the accomplishments of all the fall sports teams and their participants brought a strong measure of pride to the Fife campus and are to be saluted.

Swimming

Fife swimmers, concluding another accomplished season, finished tied for 10th at the Class 2A state swimming and diving championships in Federal Way. Squalicum won the state title.

Fife senior Megan Harkness finished sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:40.34) and eighth in the 200 free (2:08.11).

Delaney Peugh finished sixth in the 1-meter diving competition.

Fife had gone into the state meet having won the district team title with 104 points followed by Port Townsend with 65, Interlake with 57 and Steilacoom with 43.

Fife, now the biggest 2A program in the state with 50 swimmers, has won league for the past four years, districts the past three and had been in the top five at state for the past four years. Seniors who participated in their final season include: Harkness, Kailey Baker, Alex Brain, Chesia Macri, Christie Matthews, Carolyn McGunagle, Anna Moore, Shawn Moyle, Olivia Pletcher, Caitlin Schille, Tara Tippen and Faith Wasmund.

Volleyball

Fife took home its first state placing since 2005, losing a dramatic five-set match to Black Hills (27-25, 20-25, 25-22, 16-26, 10-15). Fife faced Black Hills after having lost another five-set match in the semifinals to Archbishop Murphy, who went on to play in the championship game and finish second behind Pullman.

Taylor Dillard, who was recently named to The News Tribune’s All-Area first team, also was named to the all-tournament first team.

Throughout the season, Dillard, a setter, had about 500 assists, according to coach Jan Kirk.

Jessica Miller made the all-tournament second team and led her team in kills this season, with about 400, according to Kirk.

“You know, it was really a very good effort and most of these girls are coming back next season. So the future is very bright.”

Other starters on the squad were Ashley Coley, Amanda Koke, Amber Swayze, Kacee Woods, Kyla Nakamura, Lacey Bailey, Alysha Hassell and Sydney Behrendt.

Soccer

The Fife Trojans’ two-year hold on the state championship ended last week with a 3-0 loss to East Valley of Yakima. Fife, playing in its fourth straight state tournament, had defeated Tumwater, 1-0, before its quarterfinal loss. Three seniors who were part of the back-to-back state championship teams played in their final game: goalkeeper Stephanie McFarland, Shelby Hutton and Haley Shaw.

Cam Booser to OSU

Cameron Booser became the first Fife High School baseball player to receive a Division I scholarship, when he recently signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the Oregon State Beavers.

FHS Athletic Director Amanda Fox held a ceremony with Booser’s family, coaches, and other guests to celebrate the occasion. Booser has played baseball the past two seasons at FHS and holds the team’s record for strikeout/walk ratio. He was selected the Nisqually League’s Most Valuable Player last season.

“Cam has been a great leader on the field for the Fife baseball team. He is a great competitor and works hard on the little details of the game. I’m excited for his senior season and his future at OSU,” Fife baseball coach Shane Nixon said.
