The last time a Fife girls basketball team went to the state tournament was 11 years ago.
And back in the middle of January, it did not appear it would be this year’s team that would break that trend.
After a 59-45 loss to Eatonville, the Trojans were 3-7. But the team had shown a lot of resilience in that game after having fallen behind, 23-5, in the first quarter.
“We’ll keep our heads up. Don’t worry about that,” senior Ryann Waldman had said.
“I would have described our chances of getting to state as pretty much impossible,” Fife’s leading scorer Shelly Kilcup said.
Despite some stumbles and a 5-7 conference record, the Fife girls won when they had to and headed back to the state tournament this week in Yakima.
Kilcup, who averaged 17 points a game and scored 22 against Steilacoom in the 2A district tournament, is the main reason.
Her teammates, who have over the course of the past three weeks really grown as a unit, found her open on the wing and she did the rest.
“I was ready and I took what they gave me,” Kilcup said.
“This team worked really hard all season and they started to come together when it counted,” said coach Mark Jones.
